Description

The purpose of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and strength of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees at accredited, non-profit United States institutions of higher education. Fellows receive $37,000 per year for up to three years of financial support, along with a $16,000 cost of education allowance each year.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident at the time of application. Applicants must be at or before the beginning of their graduate study in science, mathematics, or engineering. See website for full eligbility details.

Selection Criteria

Reviewers evaluate all proposals against two criteria:

  • Intellectual Merit: The Intellectual Merit criterion encompasses the potential to advance knowledge
  • Broader Impacts: The Broader Impacts criterion encompasses the potential to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes.

Application Procedure

Applications are submitted through the NSF website. Deadlines are typically in October or November. Fellows are typically announced in March or April.
