Professor Lynne Gratz
she/herProfessor of Chemistry and Environmental Studies
I am an atmospheric chemist who studies the origins, transport, and fate of air pollutants, such as mercury and ozone. My work is motivated by the negative impacts that environmental emissions can have on sensitive ecosystems and human health. I combine field-based chemical and meteorological measurements with statistical and meteorological models to investigate the transport pathways, chemical reactions, and removal processes that pollutants undergo in the atmosphere. My research has taken me to urban-industrial areas in the Midwestern U.S.; to mountaintop observatories in Colorado, Oregon, Italy, and Nepal; and onboard the NSF/NCAR C-130 research aircraft. From 2020-2024 I was the lead investigator on an NSF-funded project at the Storm Peak Laboratory in Steamboat Springs, CO studying the origins and chemistry of oxidized mercury in a background continental atmosphere. I am increasingly interested in measuring the impacts of wildfires on air quality in both urban and remote areas. Currently I am collaborating on a study of ozone production in biomass burning plumes at the Mount Bachelor Observatory in Bend, OR. My teaching interests lie at the intersection of atmospheric and environmental chemistry, meteorology, climate change, energy generation, public health and environmental justice. I received my B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. I was then a post-doctoral researcher at the CNR-IIA in Rende, Italy and at the University of Washington-Bothell. Prior to joining the ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó faculty in Chemistry and Environmental Studies, I was a professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Colorado College.
Amy Cotter

I am a graduate of Colorado College in Environmental Science, where I built an interdisciplinary background spanning ecology, geology, policy, and atmospheric science. As an undergraduate, I participated in a field course taught by Dr. Gratz at Storm Peak Laboratory (SPL), basing my research project using SPL data on the effects of wildfire conditions on aerosol properties at this high-elevation site. After graduating, I worked at Mount Washington Observatory as a Summit Intern, Educator, and then Weather Observer and Meteorologist, combining atmospheric observations with science education and communication. In search of new mountains to climb and new atmospheric instrumentation to maintain, I moved west to join the Gratz Lab as a Research Assistant, where I maintain instrumentation at Mount Bachelor Observatory, support both faculty- and student-led research, and participate in public outreach.

Ezra Krantz ‘27
he/himEzra is a senior Environmental Studies-Chemistry major in the Gratz and Cass Labs. His recent work investigates car-derived environmental pollutants entering the ÈËÆÞÓÕ»ó College canyon through storm drain systems. In this project, Ezra used ICP-MS to quantify heavy metals in water and soil samples, and LC-MS to detect 6PPD-Q in water samples. Outside of the lab, he enjoys cooking cozy soups, reading books from public libraries, roller skating, and backpacking the Appalachian and Cascade mountains.
